The spring fishing at Six Lakes Fishing Preserve has been incredible. Fishermen have been catching lots of great trout in all sizes. Many fishermen have been reporting nice evening hatches with some really good dry fly fishing. In this blog we will share some our favorite fly patterns and techniques for late spring and early summer Utah family fishing.
In May there are many midge hatches in late afternoons and evenings. Fishermen and nature enthusiasts love this time of year as fish feed heavily on these midge hatches and birds and animals are active around the preserve. It is common to see deer, coyotes, hawks, osprey, herons, minks, and loons. During May midge and chironomid patterns fished about 3 feet under a large dry fly or strike indicator is very productive. Some of our favorite patterns are zebra midges, sno cone chironomids, blood midges, disco midges, and crystal midges. One of the best techniques is to use a parachute hopper or parachute PMX and drop a sno cone chironomid or blood midge off about 3 feet. Casting this set up along the edge of weedbeds, woody debris, or undwater rocks and letting it sit will attract fish feeding along the structure. Many of the fish will eat the midge or chironomid, but some will come all the way up for the dry fly.
Near the end of May damselflies start to get active at Six Lake Fishing Preserve. Trout feast on these tasty flies as they get active and swim out of the weedbeds toward the surface to hatch off. From late May to the middle of June imitating these damselfly larvae with a damselfly nymph or small, olive woolly bugger is a great way to catch trout at Six Lakes. Stripping these flies along the edges of underwater rocks, woody debris, and weedbeds.
Families love to stay at Six Lakes in May and June to enjoy the amazing fishing, mild weather, playing in the swimming pool, and watching the wildlife. Mountain biking and hiking are also favorite activities for families staying at Six Lakes. The Six Lakes Fishing Preserve is a beautiful place to spend some time outdoors with your family in May and June. We hope to see you and your family this June at Six Lakes!
